LOL at Creative

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

Today I got my Creative Zen Micro back from RMA. Vijay knows a guy who knows a guy who's in the Creative company. My Micro has been experiencing head jack problems, the audio only appeared on one side of the earphones and becomes heavily distorted with heavy static noise. I searched thru forums and found out that Creative had problems with the early batches of Micros and this was one of them.

So excited I was to get it back thinking I had my "study companion" back but sitting down and powering up the gadget, I found that the problem was still there! Heck, this unit was there for about a week and the problems is still not fixed. Ugghh...so "putus stim" man...

Then I got home and searched for a solution and to my delight found some guides to repair my unit. So being an engineer...ahem...and trying to act macho...ahem....I chose to take the risk and do it myself.

Ingredients:
  • Creative Zen Micro mp3 player
  • Micro philips screwdriver
  • Tesco flyer
  • Soldering iron (optional)
  • Good amount balls to pry the player open
Now let's get started.
First thing I had to do was to pry open the player. I was trying to be really careful so that I don't destroy any last hopes of fixing me player. Getting the interface and casing apart was a bitch, had to exert some force to push it out. My palms was sweaty and fear of screwing up is in the air~

Done! My player disrobed :D

The mainboard...naked..and we don't need that

This is what I'll be fixing

Or more precisely, screw the board off the casing and this is what I'll be fixing

Next step, tear a small piece of paper from a Tesco flyer and fold it to six layers..

....and place it on the metal casing of the headjack and screw it back on

Another guide says to solder the points connecting the headjack port to the board but I was lazy and went with the folded paper solution. If ever the problem resurface, I'll probably solder it then.
And that's it. Reassembled the player and tested the player. Worked like magic. The audio was clear on both channels and no static distortion present.

I officially fixed my own player!

Wohoo! Now that was self empowering :D I'm listening to it while I construct this post. It only took 30mins for me to fix this while the dudes at Creative held on to my player for a
week without getting it fixed...another example of "if you want it done, do it yourself". Now I'm thinking of getting some good IEMs or in-ear-phones, like this.

I referred to these sites for the guides to doing this right, in case anyone else is facing the same problem.
Now that it's fixed time to head to the library with a new set of songs and study! Hopefully :x

The only thing is, these 2 clips fell out...any I have no idea where they belong. Hopefully the player doesn't die on me later D:

Parrot Fish

Sunday, August 26, 2007

Last Sunday I a call from Ah Hua, one of my classmates asking "wan eat fish?". Ah Hua is a fishing enthusiast and is currently an invited writer for a chinese fishing magazine and gets paid RM500 per article. That's how good he is. While studying for the last finals he's been telling us how good the parrot fish is, and this semester he took a whole cooler box of that down from Kuantan. I'm surprised this fish is edible but fish sounds good to me~
So Calvin "baba" Chow, Ah Hua and his girlfriend Amy, and Addy Chan all went over to Addy's girlfriend, Yen's house because her kitchen is the best equipped.

The parrot fish I've been told wonderful stories about

Parrot fish is a reef fish and comes in many colours, including purple and green. Really different from your average market fish. I was told it's even more colourful when alive. I think I've seen this fish while vacationing in Redang before.

Baba told me to start taking pics and this is almost everyone

Girls doing their thing..Amy on the left, Yen on the right

The girls told us to leave the kitchen and let them handle everything. So what did the guys do?
Watch tv and camwhore.

Macam old men talking business while their wives toil in the kitchen

Then we camwhored for abit

And the food was ready!

Better view of our beloved fish

We ate and ate until there was nothing left

A little souvenir of the parrot's beak haha

The fish was great, flaky and is best stimmed. The meat is extraordinarily white. Certainly different.
Some stuff about this group of people. The guys are all my classmates in the same major. The all have girlfriends and the girlfriends all know each other and they hang out together. I call them the couple club. Whenever they get together they would call me along, sometimes I feel like "tiang lampu" haha but their girlfriends are also very friendly. They all know me by name. See, why can't some girlfriends be like them *cough*

CF Tenth Anniversary

Friday, August 24, 2007

Two exams this week. Pardon the slow updates.

MMU turns 10 and so does Christian Fellowship(CF) of MMU. The committees from both campuses worked hard to organise this event cum reunion with the theme WE ARE ONE. They invited the pioneer batch of MMU who started the CF itself. Also present were the other nine batch of students for every year including my year. Note MMUCF is CF Malacca campus and CFMMU is CF Cyberjaya campus.

The ticket

The anniversary magazine

The whole event was held at Mahkota Century Hotel and stretched from 3pm till 9pm. CFMMU from Cyberjaya campus were among the people there.

Lot's of faces I've never seen before

Very lavish

There were a few performances by both campuses that included a dance, a musical presentation and two band performances.

CFMMU's opening dance

CFMMU's Oneted

MMUCF's PG165

Didn't get to take a pic of the MMUCF's musical presentation but think of it as STOMP with Amazing Grace as it's central theme. After that food was served for hi-tea. Good food I must say.
No pics because I was busy eating. Later the seniors and pastors gave testimonies about the forming of CF and also how it was like back then.
Then we had photo sessions for each batch.

The pioneer batch, from 1997. Notice they have kids and most of them are married

Class of '01

Class of '02

Vijay and Lenard attention whoring

Class of '03

Class of '04. Spot me pls...

Pic for '05 came out too blurry.

Class of '06

Class of '07. The babies of CF

The group pic of EVERYBODY...a sea of people...and where was I?

Playing the fool with other fools behind everyone :D

All the Cyberjaya peeps. No pics for Malacca cause I was in the pic

After that was praise and worship session and it was already around 7pm. I left at 8 to rush to St. Francis Institution, my alma mater for yet another reunion. Lot's of pics this post. For even moar! pics go to Andrew's blog.
CF has a quite an interesting history. MMU disallows any society that is religion based so for a few years CF operated underground. As some of the seniors would tell you, CF today is somewhat illegal as well D: So that means I'm in a member of an underground movement? Expedacious!

The Moral Movie

Friday, August 17, 2007

This is a movie I made with my Moral assignment group. We were suppose to choose a topic and do a video presentation about it. We ended up meshing all the moral values we know. Took about 3 days to complete after we brainstormed about the theme and concept.

I directed one scene and edited two and also helped with the flow of the whole movie. Anyways enjoy our little movie.

MoralTV from shiru and Vimeo.

I laughed when I watched my acting part of the movie. So cheesy~ The movie received rousing ovations when we presented it to the class. Felt really good~
I just noticed some editting error at the end of the movie.Sorry for that.
Hope you guys leave some comments about this so I know how good this is.

I got this e-mail from pops with "IQ question" as the header.

Here is a puzzle for you

Imagine you are in Africa. You have been tied hanging on a tree with
a rope anchored on the ground, a candle is slowly burning the rope,
and the lion is waiting for you to drop and be his lunch.

Your survival hinges on the rope staying intact, there is no one
around to help you. What to do now ..........

Sing a Happy Birthday song.

And I was like "what the...."

Graduation

Last weekend was my brother's graduation/convocation. I'm gonna refer to it as graduation because it's cooler.
I was already in KL on Friday because we needed to take family photos and stuff at a wedding studio in SS/dunno what. Sis had to get to the Terengganu that night. Anyway I'll post some photos of that once I get them.

Stayed the night at a condo in Bukit Jalil courtesy of my bro's boss. Nice dude. Stayed with Ay Lai; my bro's gf and her family

6.30 am

Had to make our way there early because the graduates have to be at the hall at 7.30am.

The flowers me and sis got for them both..habis la my one month gaji  :O

Looking nice in graduation garb

Knowing the ceremony is gonna last around 4 hours, I made plans with Vijay who was staying at some cf dudes at Cyberia.
So after dropping them off I accompanied them to the hall and made off after they went in. I called Vijay who sleepily led me in the apartments and I crashed on the couch for the next 5 hours haha.

Meanwhile...
The graduates making their way in.

The Chancellor forgot-her-title Siti Hasmah

List of graduates from his major

Then the speeches were given by the Chancellor and other big shots.

I think this is displayed when the graduate is called up to receive their empty degree. This is my bro's. Can't really see what he wrote. And yes when they go up to receive their degrees, it's just an empty box and you have to collect the real thing after the whole ceremony. Love MMU.

When it was all done..and I was still sleeping on the couch

Bro and Ay Lai

Throwing their rented hats around...so graduation eih

The robes are colour-coded for each faculty. If only engineering got the silver ones...

Bro and his friends camwhored for the next 3 hours while I hung out with the cf dudes who were also graduating. Then we left for Alamanda Putrajaya for lunch.

Manhattan Fish Market ~

Bro's treat of course

This really cool bamboo forest in Alamanda. Have I told you I love bamboo forests?

Guess mom was so happy she got me White Chocolate and Macadamia Cake from Secret Recipe. Sinfully sweet. I mean the cake of course.

Bro's working in Penang now in the same engineering firm as Ay Lai. For me it's already like she's my sister-in-law haha since my mom and pops both approves. Her parents also approves. So next time I've got a place to stay if I visit Penang :D

Got a little lecture on the way back to Malacca after that; "must study harder so I can graduate too." Both my brother and sister have graduated and have started working. I'm the only bum left at home that is leeching their money
>.< Mom didn't say that haha I was just thinking.
But I'm not in a hurry to graduate and start working, I wanna spend this 2 years of sanctioned unemployment to the max.

Saw these people in Malim after reaching Malacca. Weird modified tall bikes dangling with performing items like hula hoops and a guitar. Travelling performers I guess. They attracted a lot of attention too as motorists was stopping by the roadside to take pictures of them. So if you see them anywhere in Malacca please tell me. I'm curious :D
